Which disc golf midrange should you choose?

Which disc golf midrange should you choose?

The short answer: Start with the Axiom Hex. It is our best-selling midrange, flies straight with a gentle turn and a soft fade, and works for everything from approaches to controlled drives on short holes. If you are after something more specific, you will find our picks further down.

What to look for

A midrange sits between the putter and the driver. It is slower than a driver and therefore easier to control, so it is used for approaches, for drives on short holes and for throws where accuracy matters more than distance.

Stability decides how it flies. A straight-flying midrange is easy to aim, an understable midrange has more turn and glide and gives distance without full power, and an overstable midrange resists wind and finishes with a reliable fade. What the numbers on a disc mean is covered in What do the numbers on a disc mean?, and the difference between stable and overstable in What do understable and overstable mean?

Our picks, by what you need

Straight throws

The Discraft Buzzz is one of the most widely thrown midranges in the world and known for its dependable, straight flight. It suits a wide range of throwing styles. The Innova Mako3 flies almost dead straight with very little fade and has enough glide to add a bit of extra distance.

Glide and a gentle turn

The Latitude 64 Fuse has lots of glide and no hard fade at the end, so it lands softly and gives good distance without much power. The MVP Detour has more turn and is good for both turnovers and hyzer flips, but also flies nicely straight when thrown flat.

A reliable finish and wind

The Discmania MD3 is Discmania's all-round midrange, found in the bag of nearly every Discmania team player. It is stable, flies straight and finishes with a soft fade. The Discmania MD5 is the most overstable midrange in Discmania's Originals line. It resists wind and finishes with a strong fade, which makes it good for approaches where the disc needs to stop reliably.
