Disc golf midranges
A midrange for disc golf is a disc that is used for the shorter throws, typically from 20 to 60 meters. It could be that you have to throw through a narrow fairway in the woods, or that you have to cover the last distance to the basket. A midrange is a very important disc for many players, and there is a huge selection of midranges from all the different manufacturers.
Which midrange should I choose?
When you have to choose your next midrange, it is good to have an idea of what you would like to use the disc for. Many players have 3-5 different midrange discs in their bag when they are out playing. It can be, for example:
- An understable midrange for throwing into the wind or when you want to shape the throw with a long soft arc.
- A stable/neutral midrange for straight throws.
- An overstable midrange for throwing against the wind or when you are looking for a reliable disc that always ends with a significant fade.
How to assess the stability of your midrange
To judge whether a midrange is understable, stable/neutral or overstable, you can look at descent flight numbers. These are the 4 numbers on the disc, which are shown on all our golf discs in the shop. In general, you can say that a disc is understable if the sum of its "turn" and "fade" is less than -1, it is stable if the sum is between -1 and 1, and it is overstable if the sum is greater than 1.
