Disc golf is often played in groups, and a course's capacity is normally calculated at 5 users per hole. A 9-hole course therefore has a capacity of 45 people and an 18-hole course has a capacity of 90 people.

Disc golf course design

Getting the right design of your disc golf course is the most important thing in the whole project. There are many considerations you have to make in the design process:

  When designing a disc golf course it's important always to think about safety. You must therefore make sure that the course's design doesn't compromise the safety of the players and other users of the area.
• Who is the target group?
  Should it be a beginner-friendly course for the locals or a challenging course that attracts the best players from all over the country? On many disc golf courses, tee areas of different difficulty are built for each hole, which makes it possible to combine both.
• Make the most of the area
  Every area has its own unique surroundings that should be made the most of. A tree, a hill or a small lake can help make your course something really special.
• The balance between challenge and frustration
  A course may well be both easy and hard to complete, but it mustn't be frustrating to play on. A good throw should always be rewarded, and the course mustn't become pointless with too many short, easy holes squeezed into a small area. The app is called uDisc, and it's the world's leading disc golf app. Based on that data, we've gained insight into which courses are played the most. We can use that to work out which factors play a role in creating a popular disc golf course. In general we can see that 18-hole courses are played considerably more than 9-hole courses. It's also clear that courses close to towns are the most visited. A 9-hole course in an urban setting can expect between 500-10,000 rounds per year, while an 18-hole course can expect from 2,000 to over 30,000 rounds played in a year. The course's location, condition and design naturally play a big role.

Income from a disc golf course

Most courses in Denmark are free to play on, but there are various ways to generate revenue when building a disc golf course. When building courses on private land, a fee can be charged per round or per day from the course's users. As the supply of free courses is large, it's our assessment that it will require a top-class 18-hole course to attract enough users.

Other income opportunities include:

• Rental of disc golf equipment
  With many visitors to your course, even a modest amount can quickly add up to a decent turnover over the course of a year. At campsites, in town parks or in sports clubs there's an opportunity to rent out discs from kiosks, stalls or cafeterias.
• Events and teaching
  Businesses, schools and private individuals in connection with events are often willing to pay for participation in planned events and teaching on the disc golf course.
• Increased turnover in cafeterias, stalls and vending machines
  Disc golf courses are most often built away from the immediate vicinity of other shops, and the course's users will therefore use your facilities for refreshments.

Disc golf baskets

The basket is the most important component on the course. There are many different baskets on the market, and we only use the very best for building disc golf courses. That way we're sure that you get a product of the highest quality with an incredibly long lifespan without requiring maintenance. That's why we recommend Prodigy's T2 basket, which is approved for tournaments at the highest level. This basket is also known from several of the biggest and most popular courses in Denmark.

Information signs

It's important to have good signage on a disc golf course. It helps ensure that users can quickly get an overview of the course. At the same time, the signs help users get the information they need about the individual holes and find their way between the holes. At Disc Tree we design both our course maps and the individual tee signs ourselves. We can do that from our own templates or completely according to your wishes. If you have particular wishes or requirements for colours, style, text or logos, we can incorporate that into the design of your course.

Tee areas

A tee area is the area players start throwing from when they play the individual holes on the course. These can be built in many different ways, and the choice often depends on what's most practical as well as what's allowed if it's a public area.

• No surface
  A tee area can be built with no surface other than the existing one. The area is marked with two slabs or cobblestones, which can be painted for increased visibility. The advantages of this type of tee area are a minimal construction cost and minimal maintenance. Added to this is the tee area's mobility, should a tee area need to be moved. The disadvantages are that the area can become uneven or muddy with frequent use, and that it isn't always the best experience for the players.
• Artificial turf tee areas
  Artificial turf tee areas are built on a wooden frame filled with compacted sand. The frame is usually dug down so that the finished tee area is flush with the surrounding level. The advantage of this type of tee area is a markedly improved user experience as well as less wear on the tee area with frequent use. The disadvantages are an increased construction cost as well as a potential need for periodic maintenance.
• Cast concrete tee areas
  Tee areas cast in concrete are made by casting the tee area in a recessed wooden frame that is flush with the surrounding level. The advantage of this type of tee area is that it's one of the most slip-resistant surfaces to throw from. The disadvantages are that it's very demanding to move or remove the tee area as needed, as well as significant work during construction. Concrete tee areas are rare in Denmark but are very popular in the USA because of their incredible durability and wear resistance.
• Paving slabs
  Building tee areas with paving slabs is a popular solution, and it's an advantage that slabs are usually categorised as a natural material. Tee areas of this type are therefore more naturally at home in the forest or other natural areas. A further advantage is that they're easier to build than, for example, concrete. The disadvantages are the increased cost and the possibility that the slabs can become slippery due to coating or sand.

Example of a timeline

The timeline for building a disc golf course will always be very individual from project to project. It naturally depends greatly on several factors, such as the size of the course and any application deadlines. Below you'll find an example of a timeline for a project.

• Application and financing
  Financing and final approval of applications from the relevant authorities can take both a short and a long time. In this phase we contribute knowledge, input and feedback on documents and applications. In this phase we come out and look at the area, so that we're ready to get started on the next phase as soon as possible. Time horizon: 0-3 months.
• Design and planning
  Once the project is approved, the final design of the course begins, ending with the marking of tee and basket placements and your approval of the graphic design for the signs. Time horizon: 2-4 weeks.
• Construction and completion
  Depending on the size of the course, weather conditions/season and whether you want to install the course yourselves or have us do it, this phase can vary. The baskets are delivered from stock, while signs are of course manufactured specifically for your course with a delivery time of 1-3 weeks. Time horizon: 1-4 weeks.

Project economy

The economics of building a disc golf course are based on an individual quote for each project. The primary factors are the size of the course, the choice of tee areas and the model for the actual construction of the course. In existing sports clubs the construction of the course itself is often carried out wholly or partly by volunteers. This includes setting up baskets, typically by casting them in, building tee areas and putting up tee signs. For a 9-hole course a construction cost of between 50,000 kr and 400,000 kr is expected, and for an 18-hole course between 100,000 kr and 1,000,000 kr.
