A mini disc for disc golf has many names and typically refers to the same thing; namely a small version of a disc. In disc golf, these discs are used to mark where you have landed before picking up your disc from its cradle. That is why you are also called time marker or mini-marker, and for sanctioned tournaments it is a requirement that you use a mini during the game if you pick up your disc before you have thrown the next throw.
The largest minis used in disc golf also have their own category and are called macro discs . These have the same function as all other minis, but are slightly larger and often come with nice prints and special designs.
PDGA requirements for minis and marking in disc golf
PDGA stands for Professional Disc Golf Association and it is the name of the governing international organization for disc golf, which sets and maintains the rules of the game. For tournaments that are subject to PDGA rules (also called PDGA-sanctioned tournaments), it is a requirement that you use a mini marker to mark the disc's bearing if you want to pick up the disc before you have thrown your next throw.
The PDGA sets a number of simple requirements for the design of an approved mini in order for it to be used in tournaments. This means that a mini must have the shape of a circle with a diameter of 7 to 15 cm and a height that does not exceed 3 cm. The individual mini does not need to be approved, but must comply with these requirements. If you are in doubt on the day of the tournament whether your marker complies with the requirements, you can always ask the tournament official.
When and how to use a mini marker in disc golf?
Your mini must be used in tournaments when you want to collect a disc during the game before you have thrown your next throw. It may be that you want to throw the same disc again, or that you simply want to use the mini to mark your bearing rather than the disc you have just thrown. Many players also use their minis when playing for fun, to maintain the good habit in the game.
When you mark your disc with a mini, it must be placed in front of the disc you want to mark, and in a straight line towards the curve of the hole you are playing. The mini is placed so that the edge of the mini just touches the edge of the disc to be marked, but without the disc moving from this contact.
